The preservice training program developed by the Cattaraugus County (N.Y.) Sheriff's Department and Jamestown Community College provides student correctional officers the training and criminal justice background necessary to become successful corrections officers.
Abstract
The program was developed as a cost-saving measure for training in response to the county's declining budget. The college also needed to increase its enrollment. The curriculum meets State Commission of Corrections standards and standards for peace officer training with firearms. To qualify, candidates must complete a background investigation, meet Civil Service standards, complete a personality assessment, and undergo medical examinations. Students completing the program are eligible for certification as local corrections officers and for employment by any local correctional facility in New York. The curriculum includes conversational Spanish, hostage survival, drug identification, peace officer training, and transport training. Students also complete a 2-week internship in a county jail. Corrections agencies both inside and outside the county are asking to hire students from the program and are satisfied with their performance. Photograph
