This report presents and summarizes the press clippings concerning eight sex offenders who were the subject of Level III notifications (notifications for the most serious offenders) as required under Washington State's 1990 Community Protection Act, which expressly authorized public agencies to release relevant information about sex offenders when necessary for public protection.
          Abstract
Level III includes press releases, information maintained and disseminated to law enforcement agencies, and information provided to schools and neighborhood groups. The notification on the release of William Aschenbrenner, Jr. was particularly controversial because it preceded passage of the legislation and because the original release mistakenly identified the offender's father rather than the offender. In some of the other cases, the police went door- to-door to notify people who lived near a released offender.
