This information packet on community organizing is part of a series of training and resource aids intended to help community groups strengthen their program management capabilities, particularly in areas related to crime prevention.
Abstract
Most of the materials deal with general guidelines and strategies for organizing community groups, regardless of group objectives. Stages in the development of a community organization are described in one booklet, and the dynamics of organizing are discussed in another pamphlet, including consideration of a power analysis, strategy and tactics, development of an issue group, and organizing a coalition. The formation of a block club, which is designed to bring neighbors together to further the interests of community development, is described in one presentation, and differences in rural and urban strategies for community development and organization are considered in another. A community organizing handbook describes the elements of a successful community campaign and then details aspects of successful campaigns around various issues in a number of communities throughout the country. Summaries of interviews with representatives of various organizations devoted to community organizing are presented. Direct action organizing and elements of a successful and unsuccessful community crime prevention effort are also discussed. A bibliography on community organizing contains 17 listings.
