The development of the Safety House Project by the Police Community Involvement Program in Victoria is described.
Abstract
The project involves the identification of houses by a safety house label on mailboxes where an adult of good repute is normally home at times when children are going to and from school. Children are taught to seek help in these designated homes at times of difficult or unsafe situations. The house resident in turn is instructed to comfort the child and contact the police. Organizational development consists of establishing a committee of school safety committee members with police representatives from several programs and sections. The role of the police is mostly as a facilitator who utilizes available resources and personnel. This project was deemed successful because it allowed the public to be involved in the decision making process and alleviated the sense of helplessness often experienced by communities facing crime threats. 2 references and 4 photographs
