Abstract
THE FIRST TWO SECTIONS OF THIS VOLUME CONTAIN DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SYSTEMS FOR PROCESSING FELONY DEFENDANTS IN THE COUNTY AND DISTRICT COURTS OF DENVER, COLORADO AND THE MUNICIPAL AND SUPERIOR COURT SYSTEMS OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA. OUTLINED ARE THE SOURCES OF DATA WHICH CONSISTED OF INTERVIEWS WITH JUDGES, PROSECUTORS, AND DEFENSE ATTORNEYS, SUPPLEMENTED BY DIRECT OBSERVATIONS. STATISTICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF THE DEFENDANTS PROCESSED BY THE DENVER SYSTEM ARE PROVIDED ALONG WITH A DISCUSSION OF THE CASES APPEALED. AN ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF DEFENSE COUNSEL ON THE MUNICIPAL COURT AND SUPERIOR COURT LEVELS IN SAN DIEGO IS GIVEN. THE FINAL SECTION OF THE APPENDICES IS A DETAILED REVIEW OF SOME RECENTLY DEVELOPED TECHNIQUES IN THE ANALYSIS OF QUALITATIVE DATA.
