SPECTROGRAPHIC METHOD FOR QUANTITATIVELY DETERMINING CERTAIN METALS IN PARTS PER MILLION LEVELS IN SINGLESTRANDED COPPER WIRES.
Abstract
THE METHOD DESCRIBED IS USEFUL IN THE DETERMINATION OF ANTIMONY, LEAD, IRON, ARSENIC, MANGANESE, TIN, AND NICKEL. THE APPLICATION OF THIS METHOD WAS EXEMPLIFIED BY AN ACTUAL CASE INVOLVING THE THEFT OF TELEGRAPHIC WIRES FROM THEIR POLES. THE AUTHORS FOUND THAT THERE IS AN INDICATION THAT NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS EXCELS IN SENSITIVITY, PRECISION, AND POSSIBLY ACCURACY, BUT THE SPECTROGRAPHIC METHOD PROVIDES MORE ELEMENTS FOR COMPARISON AND TAKES ONE-QUARTER THE TIME REQUIRED BY NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS.
