This report presents statistics on the numbers of each type of police personnel in Australia as of June 2000.
Abstract
The data came from unpublished police statistics for each State and territory and from the annual report of the Australian Federal Police. The data revealed that Australian police services had a total of 55,607 police personnel on June 30, 2000. These included 43,722 sworn officers, 10,191 civilian employees, and 1,694 other personnel. The total included 40,271 males and 15,336 females. The personnel included 105 senior executives, 48 chief superintendents, 410 superintendents, 120 chief inspectors, 972 inspectors, 1,716 senior sergeants, 7,525 sergeants, 17,898 senior constables, 11,585 constables, 1,931 probationary constables, 781 recruits, 170 cadets, 242 police aides, 47 ACPO special constables, and 172 other sworn officers. The percentages of females in each category ranged from lows of 3.0 percent for inspectors, 3.8 percent for senior executives, 4,2 percent each for chief superintendents, chief inspectors, and senior sergeants to 38.2 percent for cadets, 40.1 percent for police aides, and 66.2 percent for civilian employees.
