A conception for treatment of juveniles within the prison system is outlined.
Abstract
Assuming that treatment and rehabilitation in the prison system are possible, differential socioeducational and therapeutic treatments are recommended for juveniles suffering either from cultural or neurotic dissociation, or from chronic infantilism. Selection for treatment should be done at a special station and should be based on the juveniles' psychosocial structure, the type of offense, the number of offenses, and the availability of therapeutic means. Success of treatment depends on a clear definition of the goals of the prison, on a proper division of the prison into a number of subunits, on voluntary participation on the part of the juveniles, and on appropriate physical conditions. Individual, group, community, occupational, and milieu therapy should be employed according to need. Clearly, cooperation among the security, treatment, and educational authorities in the prison is essential for the execution of the program. Thirteen references are included.
