The findings and conclusions of an evaluation over 3 years of the Boys Clubs of America's national project to demonstrate effective delinquency prevention strategies.
Abstract
Information was collected for case studies of each demonstration site through onsite review of project-related records and interviews with managers, staff, clients, board members, and others involved in the project's operations. Also, six impact studies of the project's effects on clients' attitudes and behavior were conducted. The evaluation concluded that the national project exceeded its objectives of recruiting youths at risk into Boys Club projects and that participants find that traditional Boys Clubs programs which emphasize peer leadership experience the most meaningful. Also, a well-organized, conscientious program to provide ongoing training and technical assistance to institutionalize the findings is well under way, appropriate implementation of prevention principles through traditional Boys Clubs services can reduce delinquency, and a 30.69-percent reduction in juvenile arrest rates over the project's 3 years was recorded in the demonstration site cities. A total of 24 tables are provided. See NCJ 82027 for the case studies. (Author summary modified)
