CALIFORNIA'S FAMILY VISTING PROGRAM AT TEHACHAPI, AIMED AT PRESERVING AND STRENGTHENING THE PRISONER'S RELATIONSHIPS WITH HIS FAMILY.
Abstract
FAMILY VISITING IS AN ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE INMATE TO VISIT HIS WIFE, CHILDREN, AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS IN A RELAYED, NEARLY NORMAL FAMILY SETTING. TWO FURNISHED COTTAGES ARE PROVIDED FOR THIS PURPOSE ON THE INSTITUTION GROUNDS AT TEHACHAPI. NO SERIOUS SECURITY OR ADMINISTRATIVE PROBLEMS HAVE OCCURED. ELIGIBILITY DEPENDS UPON THE EXISTING FAMILY SITUATION AND UPON AN INMATE BEING WITHIN HIS MINIMUM ELIGIBLE PAROLE DATA AND SIX MONTHS GOOD CONDUCT AT THE INSTITUTION. NATURAL MARITAL RELATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE, BUT PRISON ADMINISTRATORS STRESS THE FAMILY VISTING CONCEPT. THE PROGRAM HAS THE SUPPORT OF THE INMATES, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THE PUBLIC.
