PROTECTION OF DATA FROM ACCIDENTAL OR INTENTIONAL DISCLOSURE TO UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS AND FROM UNAUTHORIZED MODIFICATION.
Abstract
WRITTEN AS A GUIDE FOR GENERAL MANAGEMENT, SYSTEMS DESIGNERS, AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT, THIS BROCHURE COVERS VARIOUS DATA SECURITY PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTED MEANS FOR EVALUATING AND MINIMIZING SUCH PROBLEMS. THE DATA SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS WHICH ARE DISCUSSED RELATE TO COMPUTER SYSTEMS WHICH STORE AND PROCESS EITHER PROPRIETARY DATA OR PERSONAL INFORMATION ON INDIVIDUALS. THE PROTECTION TECHNIQUES COVERED INCLUDE AUDIT PROCEDURES SUCH AS MEASUREMENT AND SECURITY LOGS, PROGRAM TESTING, AND CODING TECHNIQUES TO PROTECT COMMUNICATION LINES. THERE ARE ALSO SECTIONS DEALING WITH PHYSICAL SECURITY, OPERATING PROCEDURES, AND PERSONNEL. ALTHOUGH THE BROAD SOCIAL ISSUE OF PRIVACY IS NOT DISCUSSED, THE WHOLE OUTLOOK OF THE GUIDE IS BASED UPON THE IDEA THAT PROTECTION OF PERSONAL PRIVACY PLACES SPECIAL OBLIGATIONS ON THOSE WHO CONTROL INFORMATION SYSTEMS.
