This volume offers an introduction to the fundamentals of correctional counseling and intervention and is oriented to serving the needs of both undergraduate and graduate students in criminal justice programs; front-line correctional staff in community, probation, and prison settings; and criminal justice policymakers whose mandate includes correctional treatment programs.
          Abstract
The first two chapters review the history and purposes of correctional counseling, while the third chapter outlines practical aspects of correctional counseling. The next two chapters concern assessment issues, including components of the DSM-IV system for psychiatric disorders, assessment techniques, legal issues, and offender classification systems. Subsequent chapters cover major theoretical approaches to correctional counseling (psychodynamic techniques, operant conditioning, role modeling of prosocial behavior, and cognitive therapy), group therapy modalities, and effective correctional counseling strategies for specific populations such as sex offenders and substance abusers. The final chapter synthesizes the voluminous treatment literature into several basic principles of effectiveness. References, notes, tables, and figures
