THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES OF MANY CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE THE MAJOR ENEMY OF EFFECTIVE CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS.
Abstract
ALL INMATES BECOME MORE OR LESS PRISONIZED AS THE DURATION AND INTENSITY OF THEIR EXPOSURE TO THE INFORMAL SYSTEM OF INMATE SOCIETY INCREASES, AND PRISONIZATION IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO CRIMINALIZATION. THE SUCCESS OF TREATMENT PROGRAMS IS DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY ITS CORRESPONDENCE AND SIMILARITY TO THE FORMAL ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE INSTITUTION, AND THUS ALSO AFFECTED BY THE DEGREE OF SUPPORT WHICH THAT FORMAL STRUCTURE RECEIVES FROM THE INFORMAL SYSTEM OF THE INMATE SOCIETY.
