Three articles on correctional officer training address training evaluation, staff development at the Arizona Correctional Officer Training Academy, and a State-by-State survey of correctional officer training.
Abstract
The article on training evaluation advises that every training program must establish enabling, training, and performance objectives. The linkage of enabling objectives, which specify visionary goals, to training and performance objectives provides the essential format for correctional training programs. The article presents a checklist for training objectives and one for performance objectives. Objectives for enabling training are also listed. A second article describes the curricula of Arizona's Correctional Officer Training Academy. The time frame for the current curricula is 288 hours over a 7-week training period. The nine training functions of the curricula are listed. Descriptions of facilities and programs address capacities and types of buildings, budget, staff, and admission qualifications. The State-by-State 1992 survey of correctional officer training presents information on preservice and inservice correctional training, as well as data on the number of training hours spent on various subjects. The survey report also provides information on correctional officer training in Canadian systems.
