Abstract
HFHI works with families in need throughout the world to build houses for them. A HFHI affiliate is a community-based, grass-roots organization that agrees to follow HFHI's principles and policies in the operation of a house-building program in its community. The affiliate handles both the construction and administration of the program. There are three basic models of HFHI-prison partnerships. The "In-Prison Production" model is ideal for offenders whose security level does not permit them to work outside of the correctional facility. Inmates involved in this partnership model can panelize interior and exterior walls; build trusses; fabricate kitchen and bathroom cabinets; design and produce landscaping materials; and build tool/utility sheds. A second model is the "General Construction On-Site" model, whereby offenders perform some or all of specified construction tasks at the site. The third model is the "Support Services" model, under which offenders provide some administrative support or make fund-raising items for the affiliate. This is suited to offenders whose security level does not permit them to be outside the correctional facility. Variations of these models are also profiled in this publication.
