Abstract
WITNESSES SPOKE ABOUT THE AVAILABILITY OF ATTORNEYS FOR INMATES, THE ABILITY OF ATTORNEYS TO OBTAIN ACCESS TO INMATES, THE ROLE OF LEGAL OFFICERS AND WRIT-WRITERS IN PURSUING INMATES' GRIEVANCES, THE ROLE OF ATTORNEYS IN THE DISCIPLINARY PROCESS IN PRISONS, AND THE ADVISABILITY OF SEEKING NEW METHODS, SUCH AS OMBUDSMEN OR INSPECTOR GENERALS. TESTIMONY WAS GIVEN BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE BUREAU OF PRISONS, LAWYERS AND CORRECTIONAL SPECIALISTS. THE TEXT OF THE 28 DEMANDS AGREED ON AT THE ATTICA REBELLION IS INCLUDED AMONG THE INTRODUCTORY REMARKS. THE DIRECTOR OF THE BUREAU OF PRISONS SUBMITTED 4 LIST OF POLICY STATEMENTS CONCERNING 10 DIFFERENT PRISONERS' RIGHTS. OTHER MATERIAL INCLUDED GUIDANCE HANDBOOKS FOR INMATES, CORRECTIONAL STANDARDS, LECTURES, AND CARTOONS.
