Annotation

This article describes the design and implementation of countywide drug court systems in two Southern California counties.

Abstract

The article begins by describing the growth and expansion of two countywide drug court programs, Los Angeles County and Orange County, California drug court programs, and the instrumental role of establishing countywide standards and practices. It then moves onto discussing the development of a countywide Management Information System (MIS) as part of the established standards and practices and its central role in developing and expanding the drug court programs in both counties. The article focuses on the importance of a coordinated MIS in conducting a successful program evaluation. The article then summarizes the results of the Los Angeles County and Orange County evaluations, where both counties report high rates of program completion and retention, as well as low rates of termination and recidivism.
