RECENT EXPERIENCES WITH POLITICAL PRISONERS HAVE RAISED THE QUESTION OF HOW TO CREATE MAXIMUM SECURITY IMPRISONMENT THAT DOES NOT RESULT IN SENSORY AND PERCEPTUAL DEPRIVATION.
Abstract
SINCE, IN THIS CASE MAXIMUM SECURITY IMPRISONMENT IS EQUAL TO COMPLETE ISOLATION, THE AUTHOR SURVEYS CURRENT LITERATURE ON SENSORY AND PERCEPTUAL DEPRIVATION AND THE EFFORTS OF PSYCHIATRISTS TO STUDY THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF THIS TYPE OF DETENTION ON PRISONERS. THE AUTHOR ALSO DISCUSSES SEVERAL POSSIBILITIES FOR AVOIDING THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS OF DETENTION WHERE POLITICAL PRISONERS ARE CONCERNED. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE: COMPLETE INTEGRATION WITH NON-POLITICAL PRISONERS; THE FORMATION OF SMALL MIXED GROUPS OF POLITICAL PRISONERS AND OTHER PRISONERS; THE CREATION OF SPECIAL INSTITUTIONS FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS.
