This manual summarizes the provisions of Great Britain’s Crime and Disorder Act 1998; the document aims to provide an introductory guide for government officials and agencies involved in the law’s implementation.
Abstract
The law’s goal is to address crime and disorder and help create safer communities. It also reflects three underlying themes. First, the purpose of the juvenile justice system is to reduce offending; quick action is needed to nip juvenile delinquency in the bud. Second, the police and the local government, with the whole community, must establish a local partnership to reduce crime. Third, local governments and other public agencies must consider the crime and disorder implications of all their decisions. The law’s provisions cover antisocial behavior, sex offenders, crime and disorder partnerships, parenting orders, child safety orders, local child curfews, racially aggravated offenses, and the goals of the juvenile justice system. Other provisions focus on juvenile court procedures, bail, extended sentences, drug treatment and testing orders, final warnings, reparation orders, supervision orders, home detention, probation, information sharing, police powers against truancy, and sentence calculation.
