Abstract
PAPERS DEALING WITH AN OVERVIEW OF CRIME IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY EXPLORE COMMUNITY ATTITUDES, HISTORICAL TRENDS, AND ECONOMIC BY-PRODUCTS OF CRIME. RESEARCH DATA AND THE IMPLICATIONS OF FINDINGS DERIVED FROM STUDIES OF BOTH URBAN AND RURAL BLACK COMMUNITIES ARE DISCUSSED WITH A VIEW TOWARD UNDERSTANDING THE COMPLEX DYNAMICS OF THE CURRENT CRIME SITUATION. TOPICS EXPLORED INCLUDE A HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF CRIME AND BLACKS SINCE 1876, BLACK ATTITUDES TOWARD CRIME AND CRIME PREVENTION, BLACK BUSINESS AND THE CRIME OF UNECONOMIC COMMUNITIES, CRIME IN AN ALL-BLACK TOWN, AND PHILOSOPHICAL AND RESEARCH IMPLICATIONS OF DEFINITIONS OF CRIME. IN CONSIDERING FACTORS INFLUENCING CRIME IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS ARE DISCUSSED: CRIME AND THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS; EMPLOYMENT AND DISCRIMINATION AS VARIABLES IN CRIME; THE IMPACT OF ALCOHOL ON CRIME IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY; RACE AND FAMILY VIOLENCE; AND MEDIA, CRIME, AND THE BLACK COMMUNITY. PAPERS DEALING WITH WAYS OF ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF CRIME IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY GENERALLY SEEK TO PROVIDE NEW APPROACHES TO CRIME RESEARCH THROUGH THE INTRODUCTION AND ANALYSIS OF NEW STATISTICAL DATA AND IDEAS.
