Abstract
This report, which covers the period January 1, 1998 to December 31, 1998, reports statistics in three main areas: criminal matters finalized in the Magistrates Courts of South Australia; criminal matters finalized in the Supreme and District Criminal Courts; and persons supervised by the Department for Correctional Services, either as prisoners or while undertaking community-based correction orders. During 1998, 28,363 criminal cases were finalized in the Magistrates Court, 20.1 percent lower than in 1997. In 1998 there was an increase in the proportion of cases in which a driving offense or an offense against the person was listed as the major charge but a decline in the proportion of cases involving larceny and receiving or a drug offense. Eighty-one cases were finalized in the Supreme Court and 840 were finalized in the District Court. This was a 13.7 percent decline from the number disposed of in 1997. In 1998, 4,440 prisoners were received into custody; 17.7 percent were sentenced prisoners, 40.1 percent were fine defaulters, and 41.1 percent were on remand. Notes, figures, tables, appendixes
