Twelve papers originally presented at the conference on "Crime in Europe" held at the University of York in September 1988 cover crime patterns and trends as well as policies and problems in efforts to counter crime in Europe.
Abstract
The introductory paper notes the convergence, diversity, and change in crime patterns and criminal justice responses to crime in Europe. A chapter on trends in crime prevention in Europe presents data on the development, size, and nature of the crime problem in Europe followed by a review of crime in Eastern Europe. Other papers on crime patterns and trends in Europe address crime by females, drug law enforcement, and crime by and against ethnic minorities. Five papers on policies and problems focus on various aspects of criminal justice operations in Europe. One paper reviews the degree of progress in police cooperation in western Europe, followed by an analysis of the obstacles that impede further progress in this area. Also discussed is the extent to which the economic unification of Europe has aggravated the problem of inadequate cooperation. Other papers cover France's crime prevention model, inmate discipline systems, conflict resolution between juvenile offenders and their victims, and business crime control in Europe.
