Annotation

Checklists for various types of crime prevention and security surveys are presented along with general background and survey evaluation instruction. Retail, warehouse, and housing facilities (motel, apartments, etc.) are the focus.

Abstract

Initial, supplemental and followup surveys may be required. Priority should be given to security by those places that invite the public onto their property, particularly hotels and motels, apartment complexes, condominiums, transportation facilities, and shopping centers. In all types of public facilities, security can be greatly enhanced if the outer perimeters of the premises are safeguarded. Preparation for a security survey should include determining reasons for the survey and the type of survey required, obtaining floor and ground plans, and preparation of a checklist to use as a guide in making the survey. The survey itself should be conducted when the installation is in operation as well as at other times. The use of a survey team permits specialization by the members. The evaluation should produce recommendations on security guard use and deployment, administration or operational changes, and physical security measures.
