This document provides crime statistics for the State of Alaska in the year 2000.
Abstract
Alaska experienced a decrease in the total number of violent crimes and an increase in property crimes in 2000. This is coupled with a 3.5 percent increase in the population base represented by reporting agencies. There was a change in the distribution of crime by category between 2000 and 1999. In 2000, 12.7 percent of the total crimes were violent crimes and 87.3 percent property crimes. In 1999, 14.5 percent of the crimes were crimes against people and 85.5 percent were crimes against property. A total of 29 murders were recorded. The weapon used in 79 percent of the homicides was some type of firearm. A total of 468 rapes, including 63 attempted rapes, were reported. Fifty percent of the persons arrested for rape were between the ages of 25 and 44. A total of 468 robberies were committed. Eighty percent of the robberies were committed using either a firearm or strong-arm tactics. A total of 2,294 aggravated assaults occurred. Over 80 percent of the persons arrested for aggravated assault were male. A total of 16,540 larceny-thefts were reported. The number of larceny-thefts increased 7.9 percent between 1999 and 2000. Motor vehicle thefts totaled 2,231. There was a 7.6 percent decrease in the motor vehicle theft crime index between 1999 and 2000. Appendix
