Abstract
Information on Virginia's UCR program includes its history, objectives, reporting and verification procedures, statistical feedback, and its determination of crime factors and trends. Data are presented on Crime Index offenses, the value of property stolen and recovered, arrests, and law enforcement officers killed and assaulted. There were 245,193 serious crimes reported; 22.4 percent of these offenses were cleared. The crime rate for the State was established at 4,614.96 Part I offenses for every 100,000 inhabitants. Of the 307,845 arrests made in the State, 12.3 percent involved persons under age 18. The value of property stolen amounted to over $120 million; 26.8 percent was recovered. Firearms were used in 67.7 percent of all murder/nonnegligent manslaughter cases reported, and 7,998 aggravated assaults were reported. One law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty. Data on Index offenses, arrest totals, and property thefts are also given for each State planning district. (Author abstract modified)
