STATISTICAL ANALYSIS WHICH CONSIDERS THE POLICE AS ACTING AS PREDATORS ON THE CRIMINAL POPULATION, THUS APPLYING IDEAS OF POPULATION DYNAMICS TO THE AVAILABLE DATA.
Abstract
THE DATA USED IN THIS REPORT WERE DERIVED FROM STATISTICS FOR ENGLAND AND WALES FROM 1952 TO 1965. FROM 1952 TO 1963 THERE WAS A LINEAR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE POLICE EFFECTIVENESS INDEX-THE RATIO OF CRIME CLEARED UP TO POLICE STRENGTH-AND THE CRIME LOAD FACTOR-THE RATIO OF THE NUMBER OF CRIMES COMMITTED TO POLICE STRENGTH. AFTER 1963, THE EFFECTIVENESS INDEX DROPPED. TENTATIVE REASONS ARE GIVEN FOR THIS.
