Abstract
THIS SUPPLEMENT UPDATES MATERIALS APPEARING IN THE TEXT. BOTH ARE INTENDED PRIMARILY FOR STUDENTS OF CRIMINAL LAW AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. MAJOR DIVISIONS ARE THE POLICE FUNCTION AND PROSECUTION AND ADJUDICATION. UNDER THE FIRST SECTION, CHAPTER SUBJECTS FOCUS ON BASIC LEGAL DOCTRINES AFFECTING THE POLICE FUNCTION, THE WARRANT PROCESS, DETENTIONS OF PERSONS AND SEARCHES, SPECIAL SEARCH SITUATIONS, ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE, UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATIONS, POLICE DISCRETION, INTERROGATION AND CONFESSIONS, EYEWITNESS IDENTIFICATION, AND LEGAL CONTROL OF POLICE CONDUCT. TOPICS OF THE SECOND SECTION INCLUDE THE CHARGING PROCESS, PRETRIAL MATTERS, ADJUDICATION OF GUILTY BY PLEA, AND ADJUDICATION BY TRIAL. PRINCIPAL CASES OF THE SUPPLEMENT INCLUDE ABNEY V. UNITED STATES, GEDERS V. UNITED STATES, HALL V. ILLINOIS, LAKESIDE V. OREGON, MANSON V. BRATHWAITE, ROSE V. MITCHELL, AND TEXAS V. WHITE. THE AUTHORS ARE SELECTIVE IN CHOOSING CASES FOR PRESENTATION AND HAVE SUMMARIZED MOST OF THE DECISIONS IN TEXTUAL NOTES. AS IN THE MAIN VOLUME, THE FOOTNOTES IN THOSE DECISIONS REPRINTED HAVE BEEN RENUMBERED.
