OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION, ORIENTATION, AND PROJECTS OF SOME OF THE MAJOR CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH CENTERS IN FRANCE AND AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LIEGE IN BELGIUM.
Abstract
AMONG THE FRENCH ORGANIZATIONS IN OR NEAR PARIS WHICH ARE DISCUSSED ARE THE SERVICE D'ETUDES PENALES ET CRIMINOLOGIQUES (SEPC), THE CENTRE DE FORMATION ET DE RECHERCHE DE L'EDUCATION SURVEILLE (CFR-ES), AND THE CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE (CNRS). ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE ORGANIZATIONS IN THE LYON REGION, WHERE A MORE CLINICAL APPROACH IS FOUND, AND IN THE BAYONNE REGION, WHERE RESEARCH IS MORE ORIGINAL AND ON A SMALLER SCALE. IN GENERAL, FRENCH CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH TENDS TO BE DIRECTED BY THE GOVERMENT RATHER THAN BY THE UNIVERSITIES, AND RESEARCH EFFORTS ARE COORDINATED NATIONALLY. PRESENTLY THERE IS AN EMPHASIS ON PLANNING AND EVALUATION, AND A MOVEMENT AWAY FROM CRIME CAUSE RESEARCH TOWARDS A STUDY OF SOCIETY'S REACTIONS TO CRIME. RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LIEGE FOCUSES PRINCIPALLY ON THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF CRIMINOLOGY. THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS THAT THIS UNIVERSITY USE ITS EXPERTISE TO STUDY THE COSTS OF CRIME AND WHITE COLLAR CRIME. --IN FRENCH
