THE ARTICLE BEGINS WITH A HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRIMINOLOGICAL STUDIES FROM THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY UNTIL THE PRESENT DAY. THE AUTHOR THEN MAKES AN APPRAISAL OF THE PRESENT SITUATION IN LATIN AMERICA, INCLUDING THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INTO CRIMINOLOGY, HIGHER EDUCATION IN THIS FIELD, AND DISSEMINATION OF CRIMINOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITIES.
