A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF THE HISTORY, FUNCTIONS, GOALS, AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF TEN ESTABLISHED CRISIS INTERVENTION CENTERS, WITH GUIDELINES AND PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR ESTABLISHING SUCH CENTERS.
Abstract
THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CRISIS INTERVENTION CENTER CONCEPT IS OUTLINED. BASED ON BOTH SELF-REPORTS OF THE TEN CRISIS INTERVENTION CENTERS AND SITE VISITS TO EACH AGENCY, THE AUTHOR PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE PICTURE OF SUCH PROGRAM CHARACTERISTICS AS PHYSICAL SETTING, FACILITIES, CLINICAL SERVICE PROGRAMS, MANPOWER, RECORD KEEPING, AND PUBLIC RELATIONS. AN EVALUATION OF THESE TEN AGENCIES IS ALSO INCLUDED. THE AUTHOR THEN PRESENTS A NEW SERVICE MODEL OF CRISIS CENTERS, WHICH INVOLVES SUCH FEATURES AS A NONMEDICAL ORIENTATION, EXTENSIVE USE OF NONPROFESSIONALS, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CRISIS CENTER AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE COORDINATED WITH ALL OTHER COMMUNITY SERVICES SUCH AS POLICE, HOSPITALS, AND SCHOOLS.
