A CRIMINOLOGY TEXTBOOK, DEALING WITH ISSUES AND POLICIES, AND COVERING SUCH TOPICS AS THE SOCIOLOGY OF CRIME, VARIOUS TYPES OF CRIME, AND THE CONTROL OF CRIME.
Abstract
A BRIEF SYNTHESIS OF THE HISTORICAL, THEORETICAL, AND IDEOLOGICAL CONTROVERSIES THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED CRIMINOLOGY IS FIRST PRESENTED, AND IS FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION OF INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PHENOMENA THAT DEFINE CRIME (THE LAWS, COURTS, AND POLICE) AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH CRIME OCCURS. ASSAULTS ON CONSTITUTIONAL LIBERTIES ARISING FROM THE USE OF SOME CRIME CONTROL MEASURES ARE INVESTIGATED. PROFESSIONAL CRIME, UPPERWORLD OR WHITE-COLLAR CRIME, SEXUAL CRIMINALITY, SOCIOLOGICAL AND LEGAL ISSUES POSED BY DRUG USE, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIZED CRIME IN AMERICA ARE ALL ANALYZED IN SEPARATE ESSAYS. THE RELATED TOPICS OF AMERICAN YOUTH GANGS, THE CULTURE OF VIOLENCE, AND THE STATUS PROBLEMS OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. FINALLY, CRIME AND SOCIAL POLICY IS CONSIDERED, WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO THE PROBLEMS OF CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY AND TREATMENT, AND WITH SOME PROPOSALS AND PROSPECTS FOR CRIME CONTROL.
