Abstract
Statistical and descriptive information has been collected through United Nations (UN) surveys of crime trends and the operation of criminal justice systems (UNCJS). These surveys have been conducted by the United Nations Centre for International Crime Prevention every 5 years since 1977. Essential features of the UNCJS as a source of statistical information about crime and justice and survey methods, specifically data collection and analysis, are described. The generation of crime statistics in the Canada, South Korea, and the Russian Federation is reviewed. UNCJS data on homicide and juvenile delinquency trends are tabulated. The International Crime Victim Survey is identified as another source of crime statistics. Transnational criminality is viewed as a new challenge for the UNCJS. 2 tables and 9 figures
