STUDY OF POLICE MURDERS IN CANADA, AND AN ARGUMENT THAT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT HAS NO EFFECT ON THESE CRIMES.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES SEVERAL STUDIES WHICH CONCLUDE THAT NO CORRELATION EXISTS BETWEEN THE EXISTENCE OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT AND THE INCIDENCE OF FATAL ATTACKS ON POLICEMEN. HE ANALYZES THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING DEATH OF POLICEMEN MURDERED IN CANADA AND CONCLUDES THAT THIS DATA DOES NOT SUPPORT THE HYPOTHESIS THAT THE ABSENCE OF THE DEATH PENALTY INCREASES THE RISK OF DEATH TO POLICEMEN. HE CONTENDS, FURTHERMORE, THAT IN ABOUT TWENTY PERCENT OF THE CASES, THE DEATH COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED HAD THE OFFICER TAKEN THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS.
