A recent survey revealed that inmate homicides increased from 53 to 56 from 1989 to 1990, but this total was less than half the 18 recorded in 1984.
Abstract
Suicides reached a high of 136 in 1988 and decreased to 120 in 1989 and 101 in 1990. Forty-nine of the 52 State and Federal prison systems responded to the survey. Results also revealed that two correctional staff members were killed by inmates in 1989 and in 1990. Assaults by inmates on staff resulting in injury decreased from 9,568 in 1987 to 5,664 in 1990. Assaults by inmates on inmates appeared to increase in proportion to the inmate population, from 10,508 in 1989 to 12,189 in 1990. Sixteen correctional systems reported riots or disturbances during 1989-90, compared to 21 in 1987-88. In Canada, with nine of 13 systems reporting, seven inmates were killed by other inmates in the 2-year period, and 55 inmates committed suicide. Tables
