Intended to supplement basic defensive tactics training for correctional officers, this manual explains and illustrates specific tactics based on the objectives outlined by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
Abstract
The text notes that defensive tactics manuals have not been written with the circumstances of correctional officers in mind. In correctional settings, correctional personnel work in a closed environment with no departmentally issued weapon within the fence line. In addition, the correctional officer usually works alone with inmate populations ranging from 1 to 100. Thus, the tactics an officer uses during a confrontation must be quick and effective. Individual sections explain the levels of resistance, levels of response, and use of force; positioning; transporters; pressure points; handcuffing; searching; takedowns; blocking and striking; escape techniques; impact weapons; ground fighting; techniques for disarming offenders with knives; and handgun retention.
