DISSERTATION EXAMINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DELINQUENCY AND SUCCESS IN ADULT LIFE.
Abstract
THE RESEARCHER SUGGESTS THAT YOUNG MEN WHO ARE COMMITTED ARE NOT AS SUBJECT TO THE EFFECTS OF LABELINGS AS ARE THOSE WHO ARE NOT COMMITTED. THE DATA SOURCE FOR THIS STUDY IS THE MARION COUNTY YOUTH STUDY, A LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF ADOLESCENT MALES IN A NON-METROPOLITAN COUNTY IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. THE RESEARCHER MAINTAINED THAT THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CONSEQUENCES OF LABELING WOULD BE RESTRICTIONS IN STATUS AND ECONOMIC POTENTIAL. FATHER'S OCCUPATION AND EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT WERE USED AS INDICATORS OF SOCIAL CLASS ORIGINS AND SOCIAL CLASS FUTURE. IN RELATING CASES OF DELINQUENCY LABELING TO VARIOUS OTHER FACTORS, THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT LABEL IS THE INITIAL ONE WHETHER IT BE SCHOOL FAILURE OR THE FIRST DELINQUENT LABEL.
