PROJECT AIMED AT BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE AND CORRECTIONS BY DEVELOPING AND TESTING COURSE MATERIAL AND EXPOSING OFFICERS TO THIS TECHNOLOGY.
Abstract
THE INSERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM OF THE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS TEACHING AND RESEARCH CENTER FOCUSED ON THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE CORRECTIONAL OFFICER, AND TEACHING TECHNIQUES, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON THE USE OF AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS. KNOWLEDGE FROM THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES REGARDING LEARNING AND HUMAN BEHAVIOR WAS STUDIED IN APPLICATION TO CORRECTIONAL OFFICER TRAINING. A MAJOR PREMISE OF THE PILOT PROGRAM WAS THAT THE CURRICULUM SHOULD BUILD ON THE TRAINING PROGRAMS WHICH DID EXIST IN THE PRISON SYSTEM. QUESTIONNAIRES SENT TO PRISON SYSTEMS AND STAFF VISITS INDICATED THE NEED FOR ALTERNATIVES TO THE LECTURE METHOD. THE PILOT TRAINING PROGRAM MADE APPARENT THE DISPARITY IN THOUGHT BETWEEN ADMINISTRATIVE AND CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS. WRITTEN TESTS AND EVALUATION OF THE NINE-WEEK TRAINING INSTITUTE WHICH FOLLOWED WERE POSITIVE AND THE INSTITUTE DID HAVE AN IMPACT ON TRAINING. AT THE TIME OF THE FOLLOW-UP, ABOUT HALF OF THE CONTENT OF TRAINING PROGRAMS CONSISTED OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE RELATED TOPICS, AS OPPOSED TO ONLY 20 PERCENT BEFORE THE PROGRAM STARTED. (AUTHOR MODIFIED)
