A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF DEVIANCE, INCLUDING ITS DEFINITION, THEORIES, EXPLANATIONS, PERSPECTIVES, AND A RECOMMENDED SOCIAL POLICY TOWARD DEVIANCE.
Abstract
THE PHENOMENON OF DEVIANCY AND ITS GENERAL CATEGORIES OF MANIFESTATION ARE DISCUSSED. BIOLOGICAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL CAUSES FOR DEVIANT BEHAVIOR ARE ANALYZED, ALONG WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL, PSYCHOANALYTIC, ANOMIE, AND CULTURAL TRANSMISSION THEORIES. DEVIANCE AND SICKNESS IS CONSIDERED, AND SOCIOLOGICAL PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN LEARNING ABOUT DEVIANT PATTERNS ARE EXAMINED. THE PATTERNS BY WHICH DEVIANTS TRY AND ADJUST TO NORMAL SOCIETY ARE EXPLORED AND THE METHODS OF SOCIAL CONTROL EMPLOYED BY DOMINANT BEHAVIORAL GROUPS ARE DESCRIBED. DEVIANCE AND SOCIAL POLICY ARE CONSIDERED, AND DECRIMINALIZATION IS DISCUSSED.
