Abstract
LaserFiche, a Long Beach (California) firm, serves over 50 police departments nationwide. Some other police departments are using ZyLAB's document imaging software entitled, ZyIMAGE Investigate. LaserFiche offers a range of document storage solutions, including document scanning, CD archiving, and document sharing on a network or secure Web browser. LaserFiche makes it possible for police officers to access an exact image copy of a document or report from their personal computers. Also, when compiling a police report or investigating a cold case, officers can click on the report and retrieve it in its entirety on the computer screen. LaserFiche is currently playing a key role in assisting detectives in the Wichita Police Department (Kansas) in investigating an open case of a serial killer from the past who has resurfaced. ZyLAB, a McLean (Virginia) firm, produces document-imaging and full-text retrieval software. ZyLAB software has been used for over 15 years by the statutory legal deputy for Indiana Sheriffs. This software is used to maintain research data banks for the sheriffs, perform legal research, advise the sheriffs on a proper course of action, and provide courtroom representation for the sheriffs. A database of over 300,000 documents is maintained. ZyIMAGE creates an index of nearly all of the words that are in these documents.
