This 1997 Annual Report of District of Columbia Courts presents court structure, the personnel and activities of the various courts, mission statement and strategic planning goals, court activities in the community, and statistics on case processing for each court.
Abstract
The report opens with a profile of the Joint Committee on Judicial Administration, which is responsible for the courts' general personnel policies, accounts and auditing, procurements and disbursement, development and coordination of statistical management information systems and reports, submission of the annual budget requests, and other related administrative matters. This is followed by four tables pertinent to courts' finances, a presentation of the mission statement and strategic planning goals, and descriptions of courts' activities in the community. The latter include a baseball program sponsored by court personnel for at-risk elementary students, the promotion of Law Day, a juried art exhibition, a program to educate court personnel and clientele about the warning signs of breast and prostate cancer, and Hispanic Heritage Month. Data are then presented for the personnel, management, and case processing of each court. The courts include the Court of Appeals and the Superior Court. Data encompass all matters that pertain to case processing and disposition. Tables are distinguished by criminal case activity, civil case activity, family case activity, probate case activity, multi-door dispute resolution activity, and other court caseload activities. A review of the administrative structure of the court system is followed by tabular data on social services activity and court reporting activity. Highlights of court improvements for 1997 are improved access to court services, the installation of state-of-the-art digital technology, enhanced social services to the community, and ensured equality and fairness in the administration of justice. 59 tables
