STUDY OF 1,978 ENCOUNTERS IN A LARGE MIDWESTERN CITY TO DETERMINE THE NATURE AND FREQUENCY OF NON-CRIMINAL ENCOUNTERS RELATED TO DOMESTIC (HUSBAND-WIFE) DISPUTES.
Abstract
IT WAS FOUND THAT DOMESTIC POLICE-CITIZEN ENCOUNTERS ACCOUNTED FOR ONLY FOUR PERCENT OF THE ENCOUNTERS OBSERVED. IT WAS FURTHER FOUND THAT THESE ENCOUNTERS WERE PRIMARILY POLITE, NON-VIOLENT, AND CHARACTERIZED BY AN ABSENCE OF DISPLAYS OF TEMPER. THE STUDY CONCLUDES THAT EXTENSIVE TRAINING OR RETRAINING OF POLICE OFFICERS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TOWARD MORE CRITICAL AREAS OF POLICECITIZEN ENCOUNTER THAN DOMESTIC DISPUTES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
