Abstract
Part One contains three chapters on the recognition of the problem. One chapter contains a checklist that profiles escalating abuse. It includes disrespect and attacks on self- esteem; pressure, manipulation, and control; economic control and isolation; harassment, repetition, and hounding; signals of increasing danger; and signals of extreme danger. Another chapter in Part One focuses on the dynamics of power and control, followed by a chapter on what to do after becoming aware of the abusive character of the relationship. This chapter provides an outline of actions that are detailed in subsequent chapters. Part Two contains five chapters on how to stop domestic abuse. Chapters address planning for an emergency; locating a shelter, a support group, and a counselor; obtaining informal support from family, friends, and neighbors; and practical advice on a strategy for dealing with the abuse. Four stories of how women dealt with domestic violence are provided. Part Three contains three chapters on how to prepare for legal action. Topics encompass emergency action; a restraining order; and what to do about children, support, property, and other legal issues. Part Four has nine chapters that detail the procedure for obtaining a restraining order. A 27-item bibliography and appended information on how to be a support person, mediation and parenting plans, and how to subpoena payroll records
