Domestic Violence: National Directory of Professional Services

This directory provides concise information on organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to educating the public about domestic violence and specifically addresses the information needs of victims and direct service providers.
Abstract
The directory is divided into four sections: social services, criminal justice, health care, and businesses. The social services section deals with recognizing abuse, why the victim stays in an abusive relationship, help for victims, and treatment programs for batterers. The criminal justice section focuses on police and court responses to domestic violence, Federal and State legislation, sanctions against women who retaliate, and child abuse victims. The health care section is concerned with children who witness battering, prevention, mandatory reporting, diagnosis and treatment guidelines, and medication. The business community section covers corporate leaders, union responses, State employee policy statements on battering and domestic violence, and unemployment insurance claims. Narrative summaries in each section are followed by a list of contact information for major private companies, non-governmental organizations, and agencies involved in providing services to victims and batterers and their families. Because the greatest percentage of reported incidents of domestic violence continues to involve relationships between male abusers and female victims, the directory addresses men as batterers and women as victims. Additional information on the prevalence and clinical characteristics of domestic violence in primary care practices is appended. References, endnotes, and tables
