Using the findings of research conducted by internationally recognized experts, this study examines the impact of explicit sexual and violent behavior in media programming on children and the family. Recommendations for making media programming more positive for behavioral development are offered.
Abstract
An overview of the problem considers the American family at risk in the 1990's; the potential of the media to influence moral development; and media effects on personality, perceptions, and judgments. Chapters on sexual explicitness in the media focus on sexual trends in the media, the impact of pornography on children's and adolescent's moral development, women and pornography, the impact of pornography on family values, and addiction to pornography. Three chapters on media violence examine its impact on attitudes and behavior, the influence of heavy metal music and MTV, and the appeal of horror movies and slasher films. Concluding sections suggest a positive content for the media that includes prosocial programming and the needs and demands of the family market. Recommendations for action in the final section include suggestions for families, individuals, and governments. The authors believe that a combination of laws against blatant media excesses and strong public opinion could move the media toward voluntary standards for programming content. Chapter notes
