EXAMINATION OF HOW PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS SUCH AS SCHOOLS, THE ARMED SERVICES, CREDIT BUREAUS, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES GO ABOUT BUILDING AND MAINTAINING RECORDS ON INDIVIDUALS.
Abstract
THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF DOSSIERS ARE DISCUSSED: SCHOOL RECORDS, ABILITY-GROUPING DOSSIERS, PREDELINQUENCY PREDICTIONS, JUVENILE COURT RECORDS, DRUG TREATMENT RECORDS, MENTAL HOSPITAL FILES, DISCHARGE RECORDS, ARREST RECORDS, CONVICTION RECORDS, AND FBI FILES. ALSO COVERED ARE RECORDS KEPT BY CREDIT BUREAUS, POLITICAL DOSSIERS AND PARTICULAR PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY MINORITY GROUPS REGARDING THEIR RECORDS. THE BOOK'S THESIS IS THAT THESE DOSSIERS INVADE PRIVACY AND AT TIMES LIMIT OPPORTUNITIES TO GET AHEAD.
