The results of a survey of the drinking habits of 100 young offenders in an English young offenders' centre are reported.
Abstract
The study suggested that where drinking and delinquency were functionally related, the drinking could be either a consequence of the crime or an antecedent to the commission of the delinquent act. The same degree of involvement between drinking and delinquency was evident irrespective of age in the age range of the sample (15-21 years). The study confirms that a substantial proportion of young offenders with drink-related problems are open to suggestions of intervention and concludes with hints on capitalizing on this important willingness to change. 5 tables, 26 references.
