This book identifies effective models for training British drug treatment staff in HIV infection and AIDS.
Abstract
The findings and recommendations are based on a study of in-service training courses offered in England, Scotland, and the United States and the authors' experience in piloting similar course models in the London area. The book first provides background information on the relationship between drug use and HIV infection in England including the impact HIV infection has had on drug users and drug services. The development of drug training initiatives in the United Kingdom is profiled. Description and analysis of study data cover specific training modules or subject areas that are essential curriculum components. Nineteen subject areas are identified including harm minimization, safer sex, pretest and post-test counseling, and bereavement. The discussion addresses the rationale for teaching each topic and training techniques. An overview of study findings includes a discussion of key factors affecting course planning and development, training techniques, the selection of trainers, and issues in course design and evaluation. The book concludes with an examination of policy, the coordination of training at the national and international levels, the needs of drug trainers, and funding. Appended illustrations of training, glossary, 34 references, a 15-item bibliography, and a subject index
