The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Subcommittee on Housing and Urban Affairs held a hearing in 1989 to examine the problem of drug-related crime in federally-assisted housing projects. While no segment of society is free from the epidemic of illegal drug abuse, low income housing is affected most profoundly.
Abstract
The Subcommittee began to deal with the problem of drugs in assisted housing by contributing provisions to the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988. This fifth roundtable discussion sponsored by the subcommittee was intended to explore not only the nature of the problem, but also possible legislative remedies. The witnesses included private developers, public housing authority directors, a Legal Aid attorney, a police officer, a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union, and the head of the Community Patrol Organization. Among the other panelists were a State housing official, a tenants' representative, a drug treatment service provider, and a mayor, all of whom have been engaged in the war on drugs.
