This article discusses social climate and changes in social climate within a juvenile justice facility in Slovenia.
Abstract
The authors administered the Moos questionnaire (Correctional Institutions Environment Scale -- Cies Scale Form C) to corrections workers and inmates at eight adult and one juvenile correctional facility in Slovenia. The questionnaire provides measures for nine dimensions of climate. Data were then processed by the SPSS program. The information gathered in the 2000 administration was compared to social climate data for the same facilities collected in 1980, 1985, and 1995. Both inmate and worker respondents reported that the social climate was better in open institutions than it was in more heavily secured institutions. Corrections workers tended to focus more on institutional security than on rehabilitation. Generally, correction workers had a more positive perception of the institution’s social climate than did inmates. The 2000 results also showed an improved social climate in three institutions and a worsened social climate in six. Additionally, the study showed an increasing emphasis on security and surveillance in corrections management in Slovenia. 12 Graphs, 8 tables, 6 references
