This article describes programs in Kansas City, San Antonio, Seattle, and Florida that provide education, social support, and other services for immigrant students and their families.
Abstract
Touchstones is an alliance of community-based organizations in Washington State committed to advocating for the rights of bilingual students and their families. Its Multicultural Youth Action Council is a youth leadership and gang and drug prevention program formed in 1992 by adolescents and young adults. The Peer Counseling Program at Pompano Beach Middle School in Florida encourages immigrant student participation and strives to respond to the strengths and needs of immigrant students in culturally and linguistically appropriate ways. The Coca Cola Valued Youth Program is a cross-age peer-tutoring program developed in 1984 by the Intercultural Development Research Association of San Antonio and funded by the Coca Cola Foundation. Las Mujeres Hispanas (Hispanic Mothers) is a support group for mothers in Kansas City who are survivors of domestic assault. Photograph
